What’s good: Recipe competition heats up for Altoona cook

Saturday, March 17th, 2012

Jerilyn Korver was on vacation recently with her family when she got a phone call from an unfamiliar number belonging to Taste of Home magazine.

I had entered their contest in late summer and had forgotten about it, Korver, 30, of Altoona, said. So, when she told me I was a finalist, I was drinking a Diet Sprite and I spit it out all over the phone.

That awkward and messy moment has given way to excitement over the possibility of collecting a grand prize of $25,000 in the Taste of Home Ultimate Potluck Recipe Contest.

I still have trouble believing this, she said.

But for Fall/ Winter 2012/ 2013 he overtopped himself. He showcased the most luxurious collection he had ever designed before.

Roberto Cavalli Fall/ Winter 2012/ 2013 collection was mesmerizing. And I am not exaggerating since every piece that was shown looked incredible and definitely had taken plenty of time to make. Python was painted with big cat motifs, mink was printed with python, glossy ponyskin was turned into scaly croc, etc.

Top 5: Destinations for great pizza

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

With so many pizzerias in town, why would you ever drive more than a few blocks for a pie? Well, you know. Some pizzas are indeed worth going some lengths for. Bordenaros pies (see todays review on Page 7) and the goods at these pizzerias top my list:

Chucks (north side): This is where you head when only thin- crust pies will do. Settle into a comfy booth here, where the decor combines old-school charm with contemporary rich, bold colors. (3610 Sixth Ave.; 244-4104)

Chisme (Valley Junction): Sink your teeth into one of the Mexican-Italian hybrids here. My fave is the Al Pastor pizza, with moist and flabby-in-a-good-way pork, onions, cheese and cilantro on a delightfully puffy crust.
