Let’s hear it for the ladies! Female artists ranging from pioneers such as Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith to contemporary superstars such as Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift are getting their due in a major new exhibition at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.
“Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power” opens Friday, May 13. It will run through Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012.
“We’re going to show how women have played an important role in the development of popular music,” says Jim Henke, the Rock Hall’s vice president of exhibitions and curatorial affairs.

“It’s Only Rock and Roll”: A Benefit Concert
What: A “Women Who Rock” concert featuring Wanda Jackson, Darlene Love, Mavis Staples, Cyndi Lauper & more. When: 7 p.m. Saturday, May 14. Where: Public Hall at the Cleveland Convention Center, 500 Lakeside Ave, Cleveland. “Women Who Rock”: The Concert “Women Who Rock”: The Exhibit
To coincide with the exhibit opening, the Rock Hall’s annual spring benefit concert Saturday, May 14, at Public Auditorium will include performances by Rock Hall inductees Wanda Jackson, Darlene Love and Mavis Staples, among others.
Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Joni Mitchell, Yoko Ono, Madonna, Britney Spears and Alicia Keys will be among the 70-plus artists showcased in the exhibit. It will highlight not only rockers, but also noteworthy women representing pop, country, R&B, hip-hop, disco and other genres.
We’re counting down the days to the exhibit opening with a series of videos from the Rock Hall archives, showcasing female artists.
